Advisory #6 for Barbados on Tropical Storm CHANTAL Issued by The Barbados Meteorological Services at 5:00 a.m Tuesday, 09th July, 2013

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Barbados

A Tropical Storm Warning means that Tropical Storm conditions are expected or are already occurring within the warning area, in this case within 6 to 12 hours.
At 5.00 a.m the center of “Chantal” was located near 13.3°N 58.4°W or about 75 miles…120 km to the east of Barbados. Chantal is moving towards the west -north west at 26mph…43 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 50mph…85km/h with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend outwards up to 90 miles…150 km from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1010 mb…29.83 inches.

The center of T.S Chantal is clearly visible in recent radar imagery and is on track to pass about 50 miles to the north of Barbados later this morning. Scattered moderate to heavy convective showers are already affecting some sections of island as the storm maintains its west-northwestward track. A further deterioration in conditions is anticipated with widespread moderate to heavy showers, scattered thunderstorms and winds gusting to storm force expected to affect the entire island as the morning progresses. Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are anticipated while swells may reach as high as 4 meters (13ft). Buoys to the north-east of the island are already reporting swells as high as 3 meters (9ft). Storm surge can raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels.

Residents should continue to monitor the progress of this system and take all necessary precautions.
An intermediate advisory will be issued at 8.00 a.m
