Joyent, the high-performance cloud infrastructure and big data analytics company, today announced the availability ofJoyent Manta Storage Service, a next-generation cloud object store and data services platform that brings compute and analysis capabilities directly to customers’ data in the cloud. By removing the need to manage infrastructure and move data, Joyent Manta Storage Service enables enterprises to process big data faster, more easily, more securely and at a lower cost than ever before.

The new cloud storage service allows for the execution of compute tasks such as log analysis, search index generation, financial analysis and any other data-intensive tasks without any data movement or any setup of compute clusters or processing software. Code is brought in parallel to physical servers in secure containers while data is automatically merged using the industry-standard Map/Reduce pattern. “Copying data across a network from storage onto a compute cluster can take hours. Joyent Manta Storage Service strips the need to invest any time moving the data around, making ad-hoc querying and analysis near-instantaneous, seamless and cost-effective,” said Konstantin Gredeskoul, CTO, Wanelo. “We are now able to perform complex cohort analysis and retention reports across hundreds of gigabytes of data in a couple of minutes. When compared to traditional methods such as data warehousing, this is game changing.”

“Fifty percent of the world’s smartphone traffic goes through Ericsson and we are continuously evaluating new technologies to increase the ability of the network to manage growing data volumes in the most responsive, secure, cost effective ways possible,” said Vish Nandlall, Ph.D., CTO & Head of Strategy and Marketing for Ericsson North America. “Joyent’s new compute-on-storage innovation is a fundamental paradigm shift that changes the economics and utility of object storage and high-performance big data analysis.”

“Joyent and Dell have a solid history of collaboration. Most recently they became an initial member of the Dell Cloud Partner Program to help provide more choice and flexibility in cloud solutions to Dell customers,” said Kevin Jones, vice president, Dell Services. “With this new cloud storage service, Joyent provides an example of what today’s cloud customers are asking for — a durable, accessible and secure storage solution.” In addition, to ensure enterprise customers are able to easily and securely migrate data from existing NAS, backup and archive storage solutions to Manta, Joyent has partnered with data storage management company Panzura to enable enterprises to quickly and easily move large volumes of unstructured data into the Joyent Manta Storage Service with confidence from both cloud and on-premise storage systems.

Grammy-award winning rock band Switchfoot announced the release of their 9th studio album as well as the details behind their new feature film, both titled Fading West. The new album will be released this fall on Atlantic Records/Word, while the 80-minute film will serve as the opening act on the band’s storyteller-style fall tour beginning September 20th in St. Louis, MO. The 43-city tour will also make stops in major markets including Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle. A full tour routing is detailed below. Westtakes the classic Switchfoot style and infuses a vast array of cultural influences collected during their 2012 World Tour that can be heard within the rhythms and sonic tapestry of the new record. This collection of songs is bigger and more powerful than anything the band has released to date. Rooted in the same hopeful message and quick turn of phrase that fans have come to love is a renewed expression of change, hope and discovering your place in the world. While not a direct soundtrack, tracks from the new album can be heard throughout the film. Directed by Matt Katsolis and filmed during Switchfoot’s 2012 World Tour, the film charts the creation of the San Diego-based fivesome’s upcoming ninth album in its earliest and most unpredictable stages. Part rock documentary, part surf film, and part travelogue, Fading Westoffers rare glimpses of the longtime surfers on their boards and in the waves, captures the frenetic energy of their live shows, and in the end portrays a journey both epic and intimate.

The 9th Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf contest and concert returns to North County San Diego July 12-13, 2013. The festivities kick off July 12 with the Switchfoot Bro-Am Auction Night Soiree at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, followed by the daylong event at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas on July 13, featuring a variety of activities including a charity surf contest, a nerf surf jousting exposition between surf contest heats, The Rob Machado Bro Junior, and a live concert with Switchfoot on the beach along with special guests Gentleman Hall, Pacific Air, 78 Violet, and Gungor. The evening will round out with the annual Belly Up Tavern After-Party hosted by Switchfoot and featuring performances by Fiction Family, Alekesam, and Makua Rothman. New this year, the Bro-Am is working with Action Sports Productions to add a live Web cast, which will stream the surf contest/concert at Moonlight Beach, allowing supporters from around the US and world to tune in and catch the Bro-Am a ction live. Information about the Web cast will be posted on the Bro-Am Web site: http://www.switchfoot.com/bro-am.

One year after its White House launch, the public-private partnership US Ignite is delivering on its promise to showcase next-generation Internet applications that provide transformative public benefit in areas like healthcare, energy, transportation, and education. These game-changing applications, which run over ultra-fast, programmable networks, will be demonstrated at this week’s “Next Generation Application Summit,” taking place at the University of Illinois-Chicago on June 25 in Chicago, IL, in partnership with the National Science Foundation and Smart Chicago Collaborative. As part of the program, winners of the year-long Mozilla Ignite Applications Challenge will be announced.

US Ignite is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, funded through its member organizations, with original inspiration from the National Science Foundation and Office of Science and Technology Policy in response to the Administration’s call to ensure all Americans have access to the information and tools necessary to thrive in a 21st-century economy.

The primary goal of US Ignite is to stimulate the creation and deployment of 60 transformative, next-generation applications over the next five years in six areas of national priority: education and workforce development, advanced manufacturing, health, transportation, public safety, and clean energy. Responsibilities of US Ignite include connecting, convening, and supporting startups, local and state governments, universities, industry leaders, federal agencies, foundations, communities and carriers as they imagine and build new applications. Successful “hack-a-thons,” “barcamp”-style gatherings and the Mozilla Ignite Challenge have been at the heart of delivering on this mission in cities as diverse as Lafayette, LA, Kansas City, MO and KS, Chattanooga, TN, and San Leandro, CA. The resulting new applications from this US Ignite community of developers are poised to have significant impact on the U.S. economy, including providing a broad range of job and investment opportuni ties.

The advanced technologies that power US Ignite have been developed through research funded by the National Science Foundation and by US Ignite’s commercial partners. Flexibility and programmability are provided through the use of Software-Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization. Responsiveness and capacity are provided through symmetric, ultra-fast connections. And local compute and storage racks power low-latency, programmable, “local cloud” capabilities. “The combination of these factors provides a whole new palette for applications developers,” said US Ignite Chief Technology Officer Glenn Ricart.

Take a look at his Book, Wild Money: A Creative Journey to Financial Wisdom.

Artist, psychotherapist and financial advisor Luna Jaffe combines all of her talents in two colorful new books for women — “Wild Money: A Creative Journey to Financial Wisdom” and its companion workbook, “Wild Money: A Financial Field Guide and Journal,”

“I want to help women understand their relationship to money and improve it in a fun, compassionate and non-judgmental way. I want them to befriend money — to develop a healthy, sustainable relationship with it,” says Jaffe, founder and CEO of Lunaria Financial, Ltd., an advisory firm specializing in holistic money management and financial planning.

“In my work as an advisor and in teaching financial classes for women, I’ve found so many women feel inadequate when it comes to money. They cede control of their money to men, or it becomes a constant source of anxiety — even shame.”

Jaffe pulled from her previous work and training as a professional artist and therapist to develop a distinctly new approach to understanding money.

“Engaging creativity helps us access different parts of our brain, and when we view money as a relationship, we see the ways our family, culture and feelings about ourselves influence our money decisions,” she says.

In “Wild Money: A Creative Journey,” Jaffe explores various transactions with money and our emotional responses to them while also sharing practical tips, including basic concepts and financial vocabulary. Meanwhile, readers can get to work in the companion “Financial Field Guide,” understanding their own relationship to money and developing a personalized plan for getting out of debt, saving and investing.

For those who stumble along the way, Jaffe provides Ask Zelda, an email where readers can get assistance, resources and encouragement.

“What a blast of wily wild refreshing amazement this book is!” writes Jennifer Louden, author of “The Woman’s Comfort Book.” “I dreaded cracking the cover. Money — yuck. But all you have to do is read one page — I kid you not, one page! — and you will be hooked.”

Sincerely,

Careen Carlton

WHAT!

Ultra-Wealthy Shoppers Flock to Nordstrom but Barneys, Bergdorf and Neiman Cultivate Relationship Business

The Luxury Institute surveyed consumers with minimum net worth of $5 million about top luxury retailers they purchase from, and the relationships they maintain with luxury sales professionals.

Nordstrom boasts the largest share of pentamillionaire purchasers, with a majority of ultra-wealthy consumers buying something from the Seattle-based luxury retailer in the last year. Rounding out the top three in terms of popularity are Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus.

How about investing in an individual? Sharing knowledge and heart can be a major investment that goes beyond money. The end result will be astounding regarding the monetary and emotional returns.

Marquee names selling higher-ticket luxury items make up for a lack of widespread appeal with deeper customer relationships. Sales professionals at both Barneys New York and Neiman Marcus rise above the competition in building relationships with pentamillionaire clients. Similarly, Bergdorf Goodman’s market share among ultra-wealthy shoppers is just one-fourth the size of Nordstrom’s, but the prevalence of customer-salesperson relationships at Bergdorf is triple the rate at Nordstrom.

Sales professionals at more mainstream retailers like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s are far less likely to have cultivated exclusive relationships. Relationships are more prevalent among women than men, and those under the age of 65 compared to those who are older.

Respondents also ranked the comparative importance of the qualities they seek in sales professionals from luxury retailers, such as recognizing them when they visit the store, receiving calls and emails with special product offers, and making them feel comfortable.

Android Application Making It Easier to Work Remotely

Virtual Receptionist Service Expands Mobile Offerings for Small Businesses and Law Firms

Portland’s Ruby Receptionists, the voice of small business and Fortune magazine’s #1 Best Small Company to Work for in the U.S., today announced the launch of a new mobile application (“app”) available in the Android Market. According to a recent study from Gartner(1), nearly 75 percent of all smartphones sold in the first quarter of 2013 use the Android operating system, and to support this growing audience, Ruby is expanding its mobile offerings. Ruby’s new Android app joins their custom iPhone app in allowing clients to update their whereabouts on the go, view messages and access call history.

“We continually seek opportunities to innovate and enhance our services to help our small business clientele,” said Jill Nelson, Founder and CEO of Ruby Receptionists. “By expanding our mobile offerings, we’re able to help clients customize and manage the way we field calls on behalf of their company to ensure a personalized, meaningful experience for each caller.”
Features of Ruby Receptionists’ new Android application include:

  • Update Your Whereabouts: Clients can quickly and easily modify the way Ruby’s virtual receptionist team handles their calls by updating their whereabouts and availability, saving time and streamlining the caller experience.
  • Check Call History: To reference a past caller’s name or number, users can simply pull up the “Activity” tab, search by timeframe and select “Calls” to view a list of caller details.
  • Receive Notifications on New Activity: If a receptionist fields new calls for a client, the app icon will feature a red number, alerting the user that new messages are waiting.
  • View Messages: In addition to call history, the app allows users to filter messages by company and timeframe, and automatically hotlinks phone numbers and email addresses making it easy to reply from your smartphone.
  • View Assists. For clients who have Ruby’s virtual receptionists place calls for them to optimize time, they can reference the “Assist” option under the “Activity” tab for a brief description of requested Assists.
  • File Contacts: The app features a “Save to Contacts” option, and details such as name, phone number and email address can be immediately imported into the user’s smartphone address book.
  • Check Balance: View invoices and update credit card information.
  • Contact Ruby. Select the “Ruby” tab for quick access to Ruby’s phone number and email address that are activated as hotlinks.
